What you need to know to raise a toxin-free baby…
|
Our family recently added one member… and we’ve made a big effort to reduce our family’s exposures to harmful chemicals. This page gives some information on where we found safe products. The links on the right provide some information about the specific toxic things that we were avoiding; mainly, plastics and PBDEs. I put this together in 2007, so some info may be outdated. Read this page to learn about the toxins. |

Our Plan: Because of Nicole’s chemical sensitivity, we’ve used non-treated items
in the nursery up until the baby is 6 months old. This is most important for the bedding,
blankets, and early clothing.
Eventually we switched to having the baby wear some “conventional”
(non-organic) clothing, since most kid clothes (except night-wear) aren’t
treated anyway. We are using cloth
diapers, since most diapers are scented and have many chemicals that are
not-so-great for mom and baby . |

|
Plastics: we’ve reduced
plastics in the room as well, so we’re always on the hunt for toys and
accessories made with wood, safe plastics or cloth. We realize eliminating
plastics isn’t an easy task, so we aren’t expecting to be able to avoid all
plastics, but we’re going to make a good effort. |

Nicole has
found many good stores on the web, and has posted her list of useful websites:
* I wrote emails to these companies and they
verified that their products don’t have PBDEs.
Things can change, so it’s always safest to check again. From the replies I suspect that most
reputable organic baby clothing will be free of PBDEs. I also discovered, while investigating PBDEs,
that they are banned in California.
Thus, clothing products purchasing from California should be free of PBDEs.
